Four stages in a loop of about 90 minutes, four to six times a night: N1, N2, N3 and REM. Deep sleep fills the first laps — the brain may replay the day and clear waste (mostly shown in mice) — and REM stretches toward morning, so the alarm often interrupts a vivid dream.
