Swallowed on its own, DMT does nothing: an enzyme in the gut and liver destroys it first. Ayahuasca’s second plant blocks that enzyme, so the DMT lasts four to six hours — and the same inhibitors make combining it with common antidepressants dangerous (serotonin syndrome).
